MATTHEWS FARM TO HOLD HERITAGE FARM CHORES

MATTHEWS LIVING FARM MUSEUM will hold a day of Heritage Farm Chores and Traditional Bluegrass Music, Sunday, September 11, 2005 from 2-6 pm.

Matthews Farm will hold a day of Heritage Chores and crafts this Sunday. There will be demonstrations of home and farm chores from soap making to cider milling.

The garden has been wonderful and with the harvest completed The Master Gardeners of the Blue Ridge will be putting the garden to bed for the winter. They will be there from 2-3 pm giving out material on seed saving and the benefits of a winter ground cover. They will also be sewing buckwheat seeds in the garden for a winter ground cover, so come and help them.

Women’s chores on a 1900 farm were numerous. Volunteers will demonstrate washing with a washboard and bucket, hand piecing for a quilt, fiber skills and applebutter making. Linda Anderson will be with us demonstrating the art of soap making. Kathy Hill will be doing some natural dyeing from native wild flowers. Sharon Puckett will be there demonstrating basket weaving, and hands on for anyone that would like to try basket weaving. Sharon will also have baskets for sale.

Larry Cox, a Bee Keeper from Sparta, NC will bring a frame of bees and talk about Bee Keeping. Larry will have some of his Bee’s Honey for sale. Larry will also be demonstrating candle making with beeswax.

Traditional Bluegrass Music will be preformed by Donna and Jerry Correll of Elk Creek, VA. Be sure to bring a lawn chair so you can sit and enjoy the music.

Matthews Farm T-shirts and hats will be on sale as well as the new Postcards featuring the quilts and garden. Refreshments will be available.
