Due to the weather forecast of rain, with already muddy fields Matthews Living History Farm Museum made the decision late Friday, to postpone the Brush Arbor Service and Meal to the following Sunday. There were a lot of calls made, emails sent out, faxes to the radio stations and putting up signs and flyers to the effect. We hope that the word got out and no one was inconvenienced.
The Brush Arbor Service will begin at 3:00 pm. A Brush Arbor is a primitive, temporary tent like structure make of small trees, limbs and branches to provide shelter for outdoor church services and funerals. Brush Arbors were used in communities where there were no churches and were very common in Grayson County around 1900.
The service will include congregational singing of favorite gospel songs with Dr. Palmer Fant accompanying on the harmonica. The sermon will be given by the Rev. John A. Duvall, retired United Methodist Pastor now living in Elk Creek. Rev. Duvall’s sermon “A Promise to Count On” will be from the Old Testament text of Second Cronicles.7:14.
Directly following the arbor service we will have a traditional old fashion “Meal on the Ground”. Matthews Farm Museum will provide the Fried Chicken and Drinks. Those that would like to join us for the meal please bring a covered dish. We will spread the tablecloths and prepare to enjoy an array of home cooked food. So bring a blanket or chair and covered dish and join us for this very special meal and time of fellowship.
Other activities at the farm will include Horseshoes, and Pumpkin painting for the kids. The members of Matthew’s Farm Museum will be dressed in Old Fashion Clothes, and we invite you to join us by dressing up in your hats, long skirts and coveralls. Admission to the farm and events are free. Donations are always welcome.
