Looking for an interesting and fun way to spend some leisure time this year? Matthews Living History Farm Museum welcomes the help of interested individuals from the community. If you have a few hours that you could donate each month and you have interests and skills that match our needs, we invite you to join us in providing a "snapshot" of living and farming in Grayson County in 1900.
The following are a few examples of the opportunities available. Not listed, are those special skills so necessary to farm living in 1900. If you can cook on a wood stove, mend a harness, fabricate a part for a tool, or cure a ham, we hope you'll step forward and help to preserve these soon to be lost skills.
Bookkeeper: Do you love attention to detail and working with numbers? If you feel the need to use double entry bookkeeping with your home accounts, we've got a terrific job for you! Very few hours required as our budget is small - but growing, thanks to our many community supporters!
Assistant Historian: Is genealogy your favorite past time? Is your TV channel selector stuck on the History Channel? Like to do web searches? If so, come help us with our "founding 100 families of Grayson County" project.
Exhibit Specialist: Do you love to create "montages" or "vignettes" at home? Have you imagined yourself becoming a window decorator or a set designer? Come help us expand our programming by designing our new exhibit spaces.
Education Coordinator: Whether you were the "teacher's pet" or are a retired teacher with computer skills, we need your help coordinating our ever expanding children's programming at the Museum.
Restoration Specialist - Ag: Do you like to play with old tools? Love to fashion your own parts when something breaks? If you have basic wood working and/or metal working skills, we would love for you to come spend a few hours with us each month on our agricultural artifact collection.
If you have a deeper interest in Appalachian History and are looking for a Summer Internship, we welcome your inquiries as well. For either a volunteer staff or Summer Intern application form, write to Sandy Troth, 783 Churchview Lane, Fries, VA 24330, or info@matthewsfarmmuseum.org. or call between 10:00am & 6:00pm at 276-744-3352. Thank you for your support!
